General distinctions

This section presents general distinctions and awards received by faculty members and researchers of the University of Patras. This category of distinctions includes paper distinction in scientific journal, award in international or national scientific competition, distinction or award of scientific organization/association, honorary position and honorary fellowship.

The presentation is accomplished in alphabetic order, based on the names of the members of the University of Patras that participate in the awarded work.

The IEEE International Symposium on Quality Electronic Design (ISQED) organization today named seven recipients of the ISQED's distinguished Fellow Award 2007 for their exceptional achievements and outstanding contributions to the field of electronic design, design automation, and manufacturing, as well as their utmost dedication to the ISQED organization and quality of design. Awardees include Dr George Ph. Alexiou, Professor at the Department of Computer Engineering and Informatics and the Computer Technology Institute.

In the 2nd International Timetabling Competition, ITC2007, that is supported by the International Conference PATAT2008 and the WATT (European Working Group on Automated Timetabling), the solution and the software for the Examination Timetabling Problem that was proposed from the group of the Computers System Laboratory of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Patras (Mr. Christos Gogos, Dr. Panayiotis Alefragis and Prof. Efthymios Housos) took the second position.

The Greek prize "L'OREAL - UNESCO 2008" for Women in Science was awarded to Dr Katerina Andreopoulou, post-doctorate researcher of the Department of Chemistry for her research activities in the field of Material Science.

Dr Dimitrios Beskos, Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, has received the following awards-distinctions:

  • Corresponding Member of the Academy of Athens for Computational Mechanics, 2009
  • Fellow of the International Association for Computational Mechanics, 2006
  • Fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2007
  • Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (Salzburg), 2007
  • Member of the Academia Europaea (London), 2007
  • P. Theocaris award of the Academy of Athens for the best Mechanics paper, 2007.

The award “Georgios Fotinos” of the Academy of Athens for the year 2009 was awarded to T. Bountis, Professor of the Department of Mathematics, for his research work related to the stability of motion in complex dynamic systems.

Dr Christos J. Bouras, Professor of the Department of Computer Engineering and Informatics, was appointed in October 2010 member of the National Committee for the Strategic of Digital Greece 2020.

Dr Christos J. Bouras, Professor of the Department of Computer Engineering and Informatics, was elected on May 2010 in the Advisory Committee of the Greek Academic Network, GRnet SA. The GRnet Advisory Committee is a consultation body and composed of scientists with deep knowledge, long experience and recognized authority on electronic communications and / or technology policy research in the country. The Advisory Committee meets at least twice a year and advises on the scientific work, the progress and the policy of GRnet, while is active in promoting GRnet’s activities in Greece and abroad. The other members of GRnet Advisory Committee are the professors C. Courcoubetis (AUEB), V. Maglaris (NTUA), I. Sahalos (AUTH) and I. Stavrakakis (UOA).

Dr George Dassios, Professor at the Department of of Chemical Engineering, was elected by the European Commission in the position of the Vice-chair for the evaluations of the program PEOPLE (ERG & IRG) for the year 2008.

Dr George Dassios, Professor at the Department of of Chemical Engineering, held the honorary position "Marie Curie Chair of Excellence", in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, University of Cambridge, under the European project "BRAIN", EXC 023928.

Dr Pavlos Kontos, Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy, has been awarded a Humboldt Research Fellowship, thanks to which he has been invited as a Visiting Professor at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universitaet Freiburg, Philosophisches Seminar (2006-2007).

To Dr George Koukis, Professor of Engineering Geology, Department of Geology, an honourable distinction and a medal was awarded by the Greek Committee of Engineering Geology (affiliated member of the International Association of Engineering Geology and the Environment) of the Geological Society of Greece for the development of Engineering Geology in Greece. The celebration took place in the Ceremony Hall of the National Technical University of Athens (N.T.U.A) on 25th of February 2008 and in the frame of a Symposium entitled "The recent engineering geological research in Greece". Prof. G. Koukis gave a lecture on " Landslide phenomena in the Greek territory. The role of Geology and environmental consequenses".

The 4th Award in the 10 best scientific studies at 1st International Competition of Food Science and Nutrition which took place on Aristidis Daskalopoulos Federation (Athens, 31 October – 1 November, 2006) received the study
“Inhibitory activity on amyloid- β aggregation and antioxidant properties of Crocus sativus stigmas extract and its crocin constituents”. Lamari F.N. (representer of our research team, according to the instructions of the competition), Papandreou M.A., Kanakis C.D., Polyssiou M.G., Efthimiopoulos S., Cordopatis, P., Margarity M.

Award in the 5 best scientific studies of the 2nd International Competition of Food Science /Nutrition and Health of Aristidis Daskalopoulos Federation (final categorization will take place in Athens on the April 9th, 2009) received the study

Dr John Matsoukas, Professor at the Department of Chemistry, Director and Scientific Responsible of the Program of Postgraduate Studies entitled "Medical Chemistry":

  • Has been awarded by the Academy of Athens and in person by Head of State, His Excellency, Mr. Kostis Stefanopoulos for his research achievements in particular for his frontiers research in the field of Drug Discovery and Design in Hypertension and Cardiovascular Diseases.
  • Has been awarded by the Minister of Development of Greece and in person by his Excellency Minister of Development, Mr. Dimitris Sioufas for his innovations and in particular for patents related to Double Action Angiotensin II Receptors Antagonists as a New Direction of Hypertension and Angiogenesis treatment.
  • Has been awarded repeatedly by the Prefecture of Achaia and by the Prefect of Achaia State Mr D. Katsikopoulos for his contribution in the local community and the Greek University and for the promotion and projection of the University and the City of Patras in Greece and internationally.
  • Has been awarded by the Mayor Mr A. Fouras and the City Council of Patras, by honorable mention, for his educational, his research and his social work, and his provision in the public University of Greece.
  • Has more than 500 publications (refereed Journals, book chapters, conference proceedings, in high stand and high impact factor medicinal chemistry journals with more than 3000 citations).

Dr John Mourjopoulos, Professor at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, received the Fellowship award of the Audio Engineering Society, in May 2007. The award was given in recognition of his significant work in the fields of room reverberation analysis, digital speech coding, and perceptual modeling of the auditory system, during the Audio Engineering Convention, in Vienna, in May 2007.

Dr. P. Papoulia-Tzelepi, Professor Emeritus and Dr. Julia Athena Spinthourakis, Tenured Assistant Professor of the Department of Primary Education were awarded the 2006 European Language Label Award for their programme "The teaching of Greek as a foreign language with the use of New Technologies: A model training programme for teachers". The specific programme for training teachers was implemented at the University of Patras.

Mr. Andreas Philippou, Professor of Statistics at the Department of Mathematics, former Education Minister and member of the Parliament of the Republic of Cyprus, was chosen by the Greek Parliament as one of the members of the Board of the Independent Greek Statistical Authority.

Angela Ralli is Professor of Linguistics, Head of the Department of Philology, Director of the Centre of Modern Greek Dialects, and Permanent Member of the Board of the European Network for Linguistic Morphology (ENLM). In 1999, she was granted the Faculty Enrichment Award by the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Academy of Athens in December 2007 awarded to Dimitris Skuras, Kostas Tsekouras and Efthalia Dimara, members of staff at the Department of Economics, the prize emanated by the “The Foundation of the University Professor Charalambos Sepentzis”. The award is classified to the Section of Ethical and Political Sciences of the Academy of Athens and is granted to the best publication in economics in the two years preceding the award’s proclamation.

Dr Julia Athena Spinthourakis, Assistant Professor in the Department of Elementary Education has been elected President (2010-2012) of the European Association for Children's Identity and Citizenship (CiCea) with central offices in London. Until 2010 Dr. Spinthourakis will serve as the associations President-Elect and as a member of its Executive Committee

The International Research Promotion Council (IRPC) award "Eminent Scientist of the year 2008" was approved to Dr. Georgia Stephanou, Professor in Genetics at the Department of Biology for her contribution in the Field of "Medical Science and Human Genetics". She has developed her scientific activities within the research group of "Genetic Toxicology and Environmental Mutagenesis" in collaboration with Professor Nikos Demopoulos. The Council has been constituted and promoted by enthusiastic well-wishers of research from the health care and scientific community. IRPC is a totally dedicated, non-governmental and non- profit registered charitable international organization fully structured to provide research and scientific incentives for the betterment of scientific, socio-economic enhancement of the civilization, mainly of developing and under developed Austral-Afro-Asia-Pacific countries. The IRPC is one of the few organization dedicated to recognize and award research in science and medicine in the whole world.

The “Dimitrios Labadarios” Prize of the Academy of Athens for the year 2009 was awarded to the members of the Department of Civil Engineering S. Stiros, Associate Professor, P. Psimoulis, Ph.D. and D. Karambalis, Professor, for their research paper entitled “Potential of Global Positioning System (GPS) to measure frequencies of oscillations of engineering structures”.

Dr Thanos Stouraitis, Professor of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering was elevated in 2007 to Fellow member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (ΙΕΕΕ), for his contributions in "High Performance Digital Signal Processing Architectures and Computer Arithmetic".

The Department of Mechanical Engineering & Aeronautics of University of Patras participated in the 1st international race for wind-powered vehicles “Racing Aeolus 2008” that took place in Den Helder, NL in August 2008, with the vehicle “ZEFYROS”.
The vehicle was designed and constructed with the cooperation of the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering & Aeronautics of the University of Patras (UoP), the Center for Renewable Energy Sources (CRES) and the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA).
The Greek team was awarded for optimal use of machine elements and spare parts. The following members of the Department of Mechanical Engineering & Aeronautics participated in the University’s Team: T. Theodosiou, Ph.D. student, S. Koumlis, undergraduate student, I. Masmanidis, Ph.D. student, A. Raftopoulos, undergraduate student, D. Saravanos, Professor, T. P. Philippidis, Associate Professor and D. Chortis, Ph.D. students.

Dr Thanasis Triantafillou, Professor of Civil Engineering, was awarded the 2010 IIFC Medal. The IIFC (International Institute for FRP in Construction) Medal is awarded every 2 years since 2006 to individuals who have made distinguished contributions to the field of FRP (Fiber-Reinforced Polymer) Composites for construction through research or practical applications. The Medallist has been invited to give the IIFC Distinguished Lecture at the 5th International Conference on FRP Composites in Civil Engineering (CICE 2010) in Beijing.

Dr Thanasis Triantafillou, Professor of Civil Engineering, has received three times in the past the Best Research Paper Award from the Journal of Composites for Construction (2003, 2002) and the Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering (1997).

Dr Thanasis Triantafillou, Professor of Civil Engineering, received in July 2007 the Golden Mirko Ros Medal from the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research (EMPA) for life's work in the field of Materials and Engineering Science. The Mirko Ros Gold Medal serves to honour the life's work of EMPA's eminent long-standing partners, in recognition of world-class research. Former recipients are Alfred Rosli and Christian Menn, Professors at ETH, as well as Aftab Mufti, Professor at the University of Manitoba (Canada) and Director of the Intelligent Sensing for Innovative Structures (ISIS) Canadian Research Institute. The Medal was awarded during the opening ceremony of the International Symposium FRPRCS-8, which took place at the University of Patras in July 2007.

The solution that was submitted by the research team of the Univerity of Patras, Computer Systems Laboratory at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (Dr Christos Valouxis, Dr. Christos Gogos, Dr. George Goulas, Dr. Panayiotis Alefragis, Prof. Efthymios Housos) won all three tracks of the 1st International Nurse Rostering Competition. The competition was organized by CODes, SINTEF and SaTT and lasted between 1/3/2010 and 20/6/2010 and was supported by the PATAT 2010 International Conference. The solution scored the best results amongst 15 competitors who had submitted final solutions that conformed to the competition requirements. The three competition tracks were variations of the same problem, with differences in problem size and available computation time. The implemented software used Integer Programming combined with heuristic techniques. The solution approach was presented at the 8th Conference on Practice and Theory of Automated Timetabling 2010.

Mr. Constantinos Vayenas, Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering was elected new full member of the Academy of Athens in the field of "Chemical Sciences (Computational, Theoretical and Experimental Chemistry", during the Plenary Session of June 4th 2010.
