Distinctions in conference

This section presents distinctions and awards in conferences received by faculty members and researchers of the University of Patras.

The presentation is accomplished in alphabetic order, based on the names of the members of the University of Patras that participate in the awarded work.

During the 3rd AMIREG, International Conference Toward Sustainable Development, which was held in Athens, 7-9 Sept., 2009, in the framework of Young Researchers’ Competition, the post graduate student of Chemistry, Mr. Vasileios Anagnostopoulos, was awarded a prize for his oral presentation entitled “Europium Removal from Aqueous Solution using barley Rootlets as biosorbent”. Co-authors in the paper were M. Anzaoui, under graduate student of Chemistry and B. Symeopoulos, Assist. Professor at the Department of Chemistry.

Honor Distinction in 4th Panellenic Congress of Pharmacology held in Patras, Greece, May 19-20, 2006 for the study entitled
"Anticholinergis for the tretment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: from a contraindication to an indication". Authors of this study were: A. Athanasopoulos, K. Gyftopoulos, K. Giannitsas, G. Lazaridis, S. Deirmentzoglou and P. Perimenis.
Principal investigator was the Assistant Professor A. Athanasopoulos, faculty at Department of Medicine. Moreover, in the team of awarded study contributed the following faculty members of the Department of Medicine: K. Giannitsas Lecturer, K. Gyftopoulos Assistant Professor and P. Perimenis Professor.

The paper entitled "The Community Network Game Project: Enriching Online Gamers Experience with User Generated Content" with authors Shakeel Ahmad, Christos Bouras, Raouf Hamzaoui, Andreas Papazois, Erez Perelman, Alex Shani, Gwendal Simon, George Tsichritzis has been selected for the best papers award of The Second International Conference on Creative Content Technologies, CONTENT 2010, November 21-26, 2010, Lisbon, Portugal. The members of the Department of Computer Engineering and Informatics C. J. Bouras, Professor, A. Papazois, Postgraduate researcher, and G. Tsichritzis, Postgraduate student, participated in the team of the awarded work.

The work entitled “Dynamic User Context Web Personalization in Meta-Portals" by Christos Bouras, Professor, and Vassilis Poulopoulos, postgraduate student, members of the Department of Computer Engineering and Informatics, received the best paper award in the 15th IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communications, ISCC’10.

The price "Alexandros Kalos" from the Hellenic Society for the Study of Bone Metabolism (EEMMO) was granted during the 15th Greek Congress of the Hellenic Society for the Study of Bone Metabolism which was held in Pafos- Cyprus the 25th May 2007 to the study:
"Muscular mass and Body Mass Index consist a strong developmental factor of bone density in pubertal male and female artistic gymnasts of high agonistic level" by L. Rottstein, G Polykarpou, Ε. Lampropoulou, Α. Theodoropoulou, P. Mylonas, G Iconomou, Α. Τsekouras, P. Giamalis, Ε. Κoukkou, AG. Vagenakis, NA. Georgopoulos and KB Markou.
The faculty members of the Department of Medicine, A. Vagenakis, Professor, N. A. Georgopoulos, Assistant Professor and K. B. Markou, Assistant Professor, were granted the above price by the Hellenic Society for the Study of Bone Metabolism during its annual meeting, as the best study submitted to the Congress and is accompanied by a monetary price of 1000 Euro.

Best Poster Award in the 18th Panhellenic Hematology Congress. Thessaloniki November 2007 for the work:
Themeli M, Lagadinou E, Zoumbos N, Spyridonidis A. “Genomic instability induction in epithelium after allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation can be caused by interaction with activated lymphocytes as shown in an in vitro model.”

Lagadinou E, Ziros P, Tsopra O, Kokkinou D, Thanopoulou E, Karakantza M, Pantazis P, Spyridonidis A, Zoumbos, “c-Jun N-Terminal Kinase (JNK) activation failure is a new mechanism of anthracycline resistance in Acute Myeloid Leukemia.”

Award in the 10 best posters in the 2nd International Congress on Brain and Behaviour which took place in Thessaloniki (November 2005) received the study «The relationof dyslexia to cerebellar function and articulation speed» D. Kasselimis, M. Margarity and F. Vlachos.
In the author’s teem joined members of the Department of Biology, M. Margarity, Assistant Professor and D. Kasselimis, former undergraduate student.

The 1st Award of best poster presentation on 21st Greek Meeting of the Hellenic Society of Neuroscience, which took place in Thessaloniki (30 November - 1 December 2007) received the study
“In vivo effects of C. sativus on the brain of mice: Anti- Acetylcholinesterase, Anti- oxidant and Memory Enhancing Activities”. Papandreou Μ.Α., Lamari F.N., Cordopatis P., Margarity M.

During the 29th European School of Medicinal Chemistry Post-graduate Students, which was held at the University of Urbino, Italy, 13-18 Sept., 2009, on Special Issues of Biomedicine Research and Toxicology, the Poster Research Presentation by Professor Matsoukas and his Colleagues, entitled “Use of physicochemical methods for the conformational analysis of peptide analogues against Multiple Sclerosis and their interactions with membrane bilayers” was awarded as one of the best and was selected to be orally presented by the Graduate Student Konstantinos Potamitis.
Co-authors of the paper were K. Potamitis, G. Deraos, T. Tselios, T. Mavromoustakos and J. Matsoukas, from the Department of Chemistry of the University of Patras and the National Research Institute in Athens.

Winner of the best interdisciplinary paper award of the 15th ACM International Conference on Information and Knowledge Management, ACM CIKM, 2006, which took place 7-9 Νοεμβρίου 2006, for the paper entitled
“Discovering and Exploiting Keyword and Attribute-Value Co-occurrences to Improve P2P routing Indices”, co-authored by S. Michel, M. Bender, Nikos Ntarmos, Peter Triantafillou, G. Weikum, C. Zimmer.
The members of the Computer Engineering and Informatics Department, Prof. Peter Triantafillou and PhD student Nikos Ntarmos were co-authors of the above article, which was chosen for the award among 537 articles submitted for publication in the conference. It is worth noting that ACM CIKM is one of the most prestigious, authoritative conferences in the general scientific area of Information Systems and is very competitive with highly selective acceptance rates, which in 2006 were 15%.

Poster Award, in the five best posters in 19th Greek Meeting of the Hellenic Society of Neuroscience (September, 2005) received the study
“Identification of candidate genes involved in the initiation of nigrostriatal degeneration in the weaver mouse using full-genome DNA microarrays”. Spathis A.D., Antonopoulos I., Panagopoulos N., Matsokis N., Angelatou F., Episkopou V., Klapa M.I.and Margarity M.

During the World Congress of Engineering and Computer Science ’10, ICIAR 2010, 19-21 October 2010, San Francisco, USA, the best student paper prize was awarded for the paper “Determination of the Optimum Docking Position for an Unmanned Underwater Vehicle using a Genetic Algorithm” presented by Panagiotis Sotiropoulos, PhD candidate at the Department of Mechanical & Aeronautics Engineers, with co-authors Nikos Aspragkathos, Professor at the Department of Mechanical & Aeronautics Engineers and Dr. Fivos Andritsos, European Commission, Joint Research Centre, Ispra, Italy.
